Bridges to the World

Soweto demonstrates the sharp contrasts that continue to exist in South Africa.

In just a few minutes, you can go from modern commercial buildings and what appears to be a normal commerce district, to the dangerous and "forgotten" slums of "Cliptown" - where Nelson Mandela grew up, and the area we visited.

This school in Soweto's slums is fairly typical - relying on donations and volunteers within the shanty town to keep it running.
